Internships

WFIC's College-to-Work program combines scholarship dollars with educational paid internship opportunities at Wisconsin’s leading companies and nonprofit organizations.  Traditionally, students participate in a 10-week internship program in which they complete over 400 hours of work during their summer recess. However, WFIC does offer a limited number of non-profit internship placements during the academic year as well.

Available Summer 2010 Non-Profit Internships:

Students currently enrolled as a full-time student at a private institution in Wisconsin are eligible to apply for any of the summer internship opportunities listed below. Students may apply for multiple opportunities of interest.
 
To apply - submit your professional resume and a detailed one-page cover letter indicating why you would like to be selected for that particular opportunity to Karissa Kleven, Director of Collegiate Programming at: kkleven@wficweb.org. Please note that while you may apply for multiple positions, you must submit a specific cover letter for each opportunity. In the subject line of the email please put the name of the organization you are applying for and your name.
 
College-to-Work has a rolling application process. Positions will be taken down as they are filled. All students will receive verification of whether or not they were selected.  Please note certain internships have their own deadlines indicated below.
 
All selected student interns are required to attend the MANDATORY Non-Profit Institute held on Friday, April 16th, 2010 from 9:30am-2:30pm at the Milwaukee County Zoo. In applying for an internship, you must  know that you will be able to attend this special training seminar.

 Hedberg Public Library – Janesville, WI                                                        
1 Opportunity Available                                       
 
Scholarship: $3,000                      
Internship Paid: $2,000 stipend
 
Open to: full-time sophomore, junior, or senior for the 2010-2011 academic year.
 
Preferred skills: a working knowledge of Word and Excel is preferred along with the ability to learn other programs quickly.
 
Their Mission: The Hedberg Public Library strives to inform, empower, enrich, and entertain by fostering an atmosphere of welcome and accommodation, building and maintaining collections and services on diverse topics in various formats, providing maximum access to information and materials, and meeting and exceeding the expectations of our customers.
 
Sample Projects Any major accepted, but ideal candidates will have excellent communication skills, an interest in books and literacy and a desire to serve children, teens and their caregivers in the Youth Services Department at a mid-sized public library. The intern will take part in orientation and training and proceed to shift rotations providing information and assistance to customers of all ages at the Children's Service Desk and in Teen Central. In addition, the intern will help carry out the Teen Summer Reading Program and Teen Volunteer Program under the guidance of the Young Adult Librarian/Mentor. The intern candidate must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, web searching and online catalogs and be able to compile and record accurate statistics. Following observation and participation, further opportunities to develop and help present a storytime for children and trivia or game program for teens will be encouraged.   Tours and observation in other departments of the library will be set up based upon the interests of the intern.
 

 

 

Holiday House – Manitowoc, WI

Their Mission: The mission of Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc, in partnership with the community-at-large, is to promote the advancement and dignity of individuals who are affected by disability or handicapping circumstances.   
 
Preferred Areas of Study: Social Work, Psychology, Education, Communication, Computer skills a plus. 
 
Job Description: The intern will spend time aiding and assisting in production work and activities. They should be able to develop vocationally related type of curriculum for small groups that could be facilitated by support staff, assist support staff with the implementation of the curriculum based activities, and lead small group activities that pertain to current events, personal health and safety at work. They will also join in large group activities and supervise clients during outings. Another part of the job is documenting activities developed, what went well, and what could be done differently the next time the activity was implemented. 
 

 

 

Jefferson County Literacy Council – Fort Atkinson, WI

Preferred Areas of Study: ANY MAJOR WELCOME; some Spanish-speaking skills preferred, marketing/communications background a plus. Must have strengths in multi-tasking and an interest to work in a diverse environment with volunteers. Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Power Point, Publisher and Excel.
 
Their Mission: Jefferson County Literacy Council is a private, non-profit organization providing literacy and language services throughout Jefferson County. JCLC is committed to building communities that are strong in literacy, language, and cultural understandings through information and resource sharing, referral and assessment and instructional services.Using one-to-one, classroom and learning lab instruction, JCLC aims to empower motivated adult learners to gain the necessary competencies to enrich their lives, the businesses where they work, and the communities in which they live.
 
Job Description: We hope to utilize a 2010 intern in our small office in a general role that will cross with different staff projects and disciplines.  Sample projects would include: implmenting activities to celebrate JCLC's 10th year anniversary, which may include fundraising events, radio appearances, newspaper articles, and open house events, as well as implementing RIDE THE ROCK, an annual bicycling fundraiser for literacy. The plan and activities for the RIDE THE ROCK will be in place and the anniversary activities are in the planning stages at the end of 2009. In addition, there are opportunities for tutoring adults, providing support to volunteers, developing marketing and outreach materials, public speaking opportunities with the Executive Director, and attending board meetings with the Executive Director. The intern would be under the mentorship of all 3 members of the JCLC staff. This internship offers a wide variety of opportunities to gain an understanding of multiple facets of a small to mid-size non-profit organization providing a critical service in the nine communities of Jefferson County.

Their Mission: To provide educational resources and services to the adult and youth residents of Southfield Townhouses offered in a respectful, nurturing environment. The Southfield Townhouses Neighborhood Network Learning Center opened in 2002 and is a collaborative effort among the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Silver Lake College, Community Economic Redevelopment Corporation of Wisconsin, Ten South Management, and Southfield Townhouses. The Learning Center is located on-site at the housing complex of approximately 475 residents. 
 
Job Description: The summer intern will have the opportunity to help create educational programs that will provide leadership and personal growth development for youth and adults living at a housing complex of approximately 450 residents. On-site activities will include summer camps, community gardening, reading incentives, summer harvest celebration, classes and life skill development. The intern will create monthly newsletters, attend meetings, work with volunteers, residents, and community partners. The intern is expected to build and maintain a trusting environment while offering supportive services to our residents. During their summer internship they will work with the manager of the Learning Center to create a portfolio of their learning experiences.
 

 

TYMEOUT Youth Ministry Center– Nashotah, WI

Open to: Full-time sophomore, junior, or senior for the 2010-2011 academic year.  
 
Preferred majors: Most relevant majors include but are not limited to Computer Science, Public Relations, Marketing, Web Development. Experience and/or interest in youth work especially welcome.
 
Their Mission: TYME OUT Youth Ministry is dedicated to the faith formation and character development of youth, empowering them to reach the fullness of their potential as individuals created in God’s image. TYME OUT is a sponsored ministry of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
 
Job description: The intern will participate in an introductory orientation to TYME OUT’s services, staff, governance structure and recent planning developments during the early weeks of the internship. The intern will then bring this frame of reference to bear in work with our Marketing and Public Relations Committee to design and implement an enhanced web presence. The intern will assess the organization's goals in updating the web page and work collaboratively to review potential design and functionality options (i.e. social networking capabilities, online document storage, password protected site access, use of RSS feeds and other interactive features). The intern will use the information gathered to complete an update of TYME OUT's web presence by the end of the internship. This project will include both planning and design as well as technical skills and will take place under the guidance and supervision of TYME OUT’s Program Administrator

Open to: Full-time sophomore, junior, or senior for the 2010-2011 academic year.
 
Preferred: We welcome any majors, but would recommend this internship particularly to those with majors/minors in social work, sociology, international studies or organizational development. Spanish skills are not required to fulfill the core responsibilities of this internship, but intermediate to fluent Spanish skills could expose the student to additional opportunities.   Other desirable skill sets include being self-directed, outgoing, strong oral and written communication skills, and critical thinking.

Direct services address family violence, immigrant outreach, child development, and economic empowerment. All of our efforts place an emphasis on nonviolence, celebrating diversity, and empowering people to make their own decisions.
 
Job Description: The YWCA's Immigrant Outreach Program aims to improve the status of first and second generation immigrants in the Rock County area (primarily Spanish-speaking populations), with a focus on non-exploitation, self-sufficiency, and civic participation.    The Immigrant Outreach Intern will focus on two major projects: (1) develop and implement a new civic participation curriculum for adults, and (2) participate in a feasibility and planning process for a potential tutoring program for children.   As part of both efforts, the intern will be expected to research and report back on issues faced by first and second generation immigrants in our area. His/her learnings will be essential in structuring grant applications and future program development .

Full-time upcoming junior or senior for the entire 2010-2011 academic year; 3.0 GPA minimum.Preference given to students whose “home” is in Marathon or Lincoln counties, although all interested students are encouraged to apply.
 
Preferred areas of study: communication, marketing, psychology, business, economics, or finance.

Sample projects: Our internship will allow students to learn about various key functions of an insurance company. You will be paired with many different operations for roughly one-half to one week each, shadowing an employee for a portion of that time, and then given an assignment to complete.
